2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Pinion Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What tools are required to replace the drive pinion bearings on a 10.5 Inch Axle on 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500?
A: To replace the drive pinion bearings on a 10.5 inch axle, the following tools are required: j 22388 pinion oil seal installer - rear (J 22388), j 22761 Differential side bearing installer (J 22761), j 22912-01 split plate bearing puller (J 22912-01), j 24433 pinion cone and side bearing installer (J 24433), j 37624 Pinion Bearing installer (J 37624), j 8092 universal driver handle - ¾ in - 10 (J 8092), j 8608 rear Pinion Bearing installer (J 8608), and j 8614-01 flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01). Start the process by lifting the vehicle then completely uninstall the Differential assembly followed by its pinion gear bearing retainer and pinion yoke and oil seal. Apply the j 22912-01 along with a hydraulic press to remove the pinion bearings, allowing extraction of both bearing cups with hammer and brass drifts. Apply a brass drift and operation of a hammer to eliminate the pinion gear pilot bearing. First use the j 22761 to place the pinion gear pilot bearing correctly before installing the inner Pinion Bearing cup with j 37624 and j 8092 and finally installing the outer Pinion Bearing cup with j 8608 and j 8092. Place the j 24433 on the inner Pinion Bearing then install a new collapsible spacer followed by Pinion Bearing lubrication. The procedure includes placing the outer Pinion Bearing followed by installation of a new pinion oil seal with j 22388 and finally fitting the pinion inside the bearing retainer. Seal the splines of the pinion yoke before installing it over the pinion shaft and till a small amount of threads become exposed. When tightening the new pinion nut implement the j 8614-01 to stabilize the yoke until pinion end play reaches its proper limit. Replace the j 8614-01 tool by inserting either the original shim or a 0.41 mm substitute when the original shim is missing. Secure the pinion gear bearing retainer to the axle housing by torquing its bolts to 88 nm (65 ft. Lbs.). Check the rotating torque of the pinion and adjust accordingly when the value does not match proper values for used or new bearing specifications. To complete the repair sequence the technician needs to replace the Differential assembly and adjust Differential side bearing preload before determining the selective shim thickness for drive pinion adjustment and backlash adjustment. The final steps include filling the axle with lubricant and lowering the vehicle.
