2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What tools are required to replace the drive pinion bearings on 8.6, 9.5, and 11.5 inch axles on 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: To replace the drive pinion bearings on 8.6, 9.5, and 11.5 inch axles, the following tools are required: j 7818 (Inner Bearing Race Installer), j 8092 (Universal Driver Handle - 3/4 in - 10), j 8611-01 (Rear Pinion Bearing Race Installer), j 8614-01 (Flange and Pulley Holding Tool), j 22306 (Pinion Cup Bearing Installer - Rear), j 22912-b (Split Plate Bearing Puller), j 22828 (Input/Counterbalance Race Installer), dt-47688 (Pinion Bearing Remover, 8.6 Inch Axle Installer), j 36614 (Inner Pinion Bearing Installer), and j 45870 (Pinion Bearing Cup Installer). The technician should start by lifting the vehicle and disconnecting the Differential assembly and drive pinion from the axle. Utilize the dt-47688 to take the bearing off the drive pinion before pushing out the shim along with the outer and inner Pinion Bearing cups from the axle housing with a hammer and brass drift. All installation tools required include j 8611-01 or j 7818 for outer Pinion Bearing cup installation and j 45870 or j 22306 for inner Pinion Bearing cup installation with j 8092 as the additional needed component. Install the selected thickness shim for the drive pinion between the shoulder of the gear and the inner Pinion Bearing. Use j 24433 or j 36614 when installing the inner Pinion Bearing before adding the new collapsible spacer and lubricating all pinion bearings. The procedure starts with installing the outer Pinion Bearing into the axle housing followed by implementing a new pinion oil seal through j 22388 procedure. The install process requires placing the pinion inside the axle housing followed by applying sealant to the pinion yoke splines and installing the yoke which must match the same marks made during previous removal. Use j 8614-01 when torquing the pinion yoke onto the pinion shaft with the washer and new pinion nut while the end play reaches just beyond its limit. Use the j 8614-01 to tighten the pinion nut until the pinion end play reaches just the correct limit then measure the rotating torque of the pinion to confirm it falls within the appropriate range for either used or new bearings. After installing the Differential assembly the procedure ends by adding the desired lubricant into the axle then lowering the vehicle.
