Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Pinion Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the drive pinion bearings on a 10.5-inch axle on Chevrolet Silverado 3500?
A: The process of drive Pinion Bearing replacement for a 10.5-inch axle requires j 22388 (Pinion Oil Seal Installer - Rear), j 22761 (Differential Side Bearing Installer), j 22912-01 (Split Plate Bearing Puller), j 24433 (Pinion Cone and Side Bearing Installer), j 37624 (Pinion Bearing Installer), j 8092 (Universal Driver Handle - ¾ in - 10), j 8608 (Rear Pinion Bearing Installer), and j 8614-01 (Flange and Pulley Holding Tool) as necessary tools. Follow these steps to remove the Differential assembly then separate it into the pinion gear bearing retainer and pinion yoke along with oil seal and outer Pinion Bearing and pinion and collapsible spacer. The j 22912-01 along with a hydraulic press removes the inner Pinion Bearing but a hammer with a brass drift must be used to extract both outer and inner Pinion Bearing cups. Immediately apply the pinion gear pilot bearing using j 22761 before setting the inner Pinion Bearing cup with j 37624 and j 8092 while completing installation with the outer Pinion Bearing cup using j 8608 and j 8092. A new collapsible spacer follows the inner Pinion Bearing press operation with j 24433 leading to bearing lubrication and outer Pinion Bearing placement into the retainer. Install the j 22388 pinion oil seal before inserting the pinion into the bearing retainer while the splines of the pinion yoke need gm p/n 12346004 or canadian p/n 10953480 sealant applied before alignment and seating. The j 8614-01 tool will maintain the yoke position while you tighten the pinion nut until you reach just enough end play for the pinion but always rotate the pinion between torques. When the rotating torque exceeds the specified values the pinion needs removal for installation of a new collapsible spacer. Replace the j 8614-01 instrument with the original shim when possible or install a 0.41 mm shim before attaching the pinion gear bearing retainer to the axle housing and tightening retainer bolts to 88 nm (65 ft. Lbs.). Determine the bearing rotating torque which must fall within used or new bearing specifications and make adjustments accordingly. The final steps involve reinstalling the Differential assembly then adjusting the Differential side bearing preload before determining drive pinion selective shim thickness and adjusting backlash while filling the axle with lubricant and finally lowering the vehicle.
