Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a one-piece Drive Shaft on Chevrolet Silverado 3500?
A: The process to replace the one-piece propeller shaft begins by using reference marks on all driveline components relative to the propeller shaft and axles before disassembly and includes propeller shafts, drive axles, pinion flanges and output shafts. The intention is to place these components exactly as removed, following published specifications and torque values. The first step entails lifting your car and then making reference marks that connect the propeller shaft to both rear axle pinion yoke and transmission or Transfer Case. After removing rear axle pinion yoke retainers and bolts the propeller shaft should be slid forward to disconnect from the yoke while avoiding slope noise on yoke ears or jamming tools between joints to stop injection joint cracking. The propeller shaft requires next you push it toward the rear to detach it from the transmission or Transfer Case before removing it from the vehicle. Assess the Slip Yoke splines to determine the grease condition before applying gm p/n 12345879 or equivalent grease for rwd with automatic transmission only. The propeller shaft installation requires transmission or Transfer Case alignment with reference marks followed by proper installation to the rear axle pinion yoke with the same reference mark alignment. Before lowering the vehicle, completely install yoke retainers with their bolts and secure the yoke retainer bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.).
