GMC Yukon Pinion Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What tools are required to replace the drive pinion bearings on 8.6, 9.5, and 11.5 inch axles on GMC Yukon?
A: To replace the drive pinion bearings on 8.6, 9.5, and 11.5 inch axles, the following tools are required: j 7818 (Inner Bearing Race Installer), j 8092 (Universal Driver Handle - 3/4 in - 10), j 8611-01 (Rear Pinion Bearing Race Installer), j 8614-01 (Flange and Pulley Holding Tool), j 22306 (Pinion Cup Bearing Installer - Rear), j 22912-b (Split Plate Bearing Puller), j 22828 (Input/Counterbalance Race Installer), dt-47688 (Pinion Bearing Remover, 8.6 Inch Axle Installer), j 36614 (Inner Pinion Bearing Installer), and j 45870 (Pinion Bearing Cup Installer). Raising the vehicle first allows access to Differential assembly removal. The dt-47688 tool should be used to extract the drive Pinion Bearing while separating it from the axle before removing this component. You should remove the shim followed by the outer and inner Pinion Bearing cups from the axle housing by using a hammer together with a brass drift. The installation requires j 8611-01 or j 7818 for the outer Pinion Bearing cup together with j 45870 or j 22306 and j 8092. Cut the drive pinion selective shim according to measurements then place it between the inner Pinion Bearing and gear shoulder. Place the inner Pinion Bearing by using j 24433 or j 36614 before adding a new collapsible spacer. Perform lubrication of the pinion bearings next. Put the outer Pinion Bearing inside the axle housing followed by insertion of new pinion oil seal through use of j 22388 tool. The service technician should install the pinion into its housing along with pinion sealant application to the yoke splines before installing the yoke while matching alignment marks used for removal. Place the pinion yoke onto the pinion shaft before installing both the washer along with a new pinion nut. The technician should use the j 8614-01 clamp to stabilize the pinion yoke during nut tightening procedures until the proper pinion end play is achieved while maintaining continuous pinion rotation. The measuring tool for pinion rotating torque should reach 1.0-2.3 n.m (10-20 lb in) for used bearings or 1.7-3.4 n.m (15-30 lb in) for new bearings. Adjustments can be made according to these settings. Repeated pinion rotations following the torque specification help seat the bearings before another torque measurement check is performed. The Differential assembly should be reinstalled and the axle should be filled with its proper lubricant then the vehicle needs to be lowered.
