GMC Canyon Pinion Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the drive pinion bearings on GMC Canyon?
A: The vehicle needs to be raised before starting replacement of drive pinion bearings. The Differential carrier assembly should be removed together with the drive pinion from the axle. You should utilize the split-plate bearing puller (J 22912-B) to drive the bearing off from the pinion. A hammer and brass drift should remove the shim while you extract both inner and outer Pinion Bearing cups from the axle housing. The installation requires the outer bearing race installer (J 7817) with the universal driver handle (J 8092) for the outer Pinion Bearing cup while the rear Pinion Bearing cup installer (J 29609) with the universal driver handle (J 8092) must be used for the inner Pinion Bearing cup. Use the selective shim thickness to position it between the shoulder on the gear and the inner Pinion Bearing. Position the Pinion Bearing race installer - rear (J 5590) onto the inner Pinion Bearing and rotate it until the cone rests on the pinion shim before placing a new collapsible spacer. The proper axle lubricant should be applied to pinion bearings before pinion installation inside the axle housing. The axle pinion oil seal installer (J 21128) should be used for installing both the outer Pinion Bearing and new pinion oil seal to the pinion. Install the pinion yoke onto the pinion shaft so the splines receive gm p/n 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) sealant and position it according to the removal marks. The pinion yoke must be tapped gently using a soft-faced hammer until pinion shaft threads become visible through the yoke. Use the flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01) to hold the pinion yoke when torquing the new pinion nut until the pinion end play absorption occurs. A proper rotating torque measurement of the pinion needs an inch-pound torque wrench following used or new bearing specifications. You can accomplish the correct torque by making small tightenments to the pinion nut when needed. The achievement of specified torque demands two successive pinion rotations for validating bearing seating before rechecking and adjusting rotary torque if required. Next replace the Differential carrier assembly before lowering the vehicle.
