2001 GMC Savana 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Brake Calipers on 2001 GMC Savana 1500?
A: Examine the Brake Master Cylinder fluid before starting work. If the fluid rests at its midpoint you need not remove any fluid but if it stands too high lower it to mid-level. After placing the vehicle on supports you can take off its tire and wheel assembly. Push the piston toward the caliper bore by applying a large bolt clamp over the caliper housing and tighten it until the piston moves into place. Then remove the bolt clamp. Pull off the front brake hose from the caliper and get rid of both copper gaskets before sealing the opening of the hose with a material to stop fluid leakage. Take off the brake caliper bolts and the caliper unit from the rotor and vehicle to extract the brake pads. Evaluate the front caliper bolts for chemical damage and switch out their defective components such as bushing units. To clean the brake caliper pin bolts and retainers for reuse you should wipe them with denatured alcohol followed by blowing them dry with non-oiled filtered air. Put brake lubricant onto the pin bolts and retainers only without touching the Brake Pad hardware and put on the front brake pads. Fix the brake caliper to its bracket while placing the bushings as intended. Then put on the caliper bolts and sleeves and apply high temperature silicone brake lubricant before sealing them at 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.). Put in the front brake hose and new copper hose gaskets into the brake pipe fitting without the rubber cap. Tighten the hose and caliper bolt to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Check the space between the caliper and bracket stops and trim bracket edges until you reach clearance of 0.26 mm to 0.60 mm (0.010 inch to 0.024 inch). Complete the service by returning the wheel assembly and tire to position then let your vehicle down. Refill your brake fluid into the master cylinder before flushing out the hydraulic brakes and looking for leaks.
