Q: How to replace the front shock absorbers on 2001 GMC Yukon XL 1500?
A: Starting the replacement process requires first raising the vehicle while supporting it to reach the front shock absorbers that perform dual functions in maintaining ride quality and suspension limits. The selected ride electrical connector should be disconnected before moving forward with work while the real time damping link rod requires removal when found on the sensor system. To disconnect the connector rotate the lock tabs moving in the counterclockwise direction followed by pulling it upward. To remove the nut from the tennon end use a wrench on the tennon end followed by taking off the upper insulator while keeping the plastic pilot ring in place. Detach mounting bolts at the lower Control Arm before pulling out the Shock Absorber through the bottom routing. Begin installation by using a suitable jack to align the tennon with the mounting hole of the lower Control Arm and then insert the Shock Absorber through both parts before placing it into the upper spring pocket. Attach the Shock Absorber to the lower Control Arm mounting holes before tightening the bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Set the upper insulator above the shock mounting bracket while using the plastic pilot ring for positioning and position the nut against the tennon end without tightening it. The rtd link rod should be reconnected to the sensor when equipped then remove safety stands from the vehicle before lowering it. Utilizing a wrench on the tennon end of the shock maintain the holding position while torquing the nut up to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). To finish installation connect the electrical connector by unlocking it first then position it correctly before pushing it down until the connector snaps into place and check for proper tab alignment. Dispose of the Shock Absorber appropriately.
