- Q: How to replace the negative battery cable on 2002 Chevrolet Astro?A: Safety begins with transmission selection into park followed by application of park brakes and wheel blockage before starting negative cable replacement. The J 39200 Digital Multimeter (J 39200) must be used to evaluate resistance levels through battery terminal measurements between negative and frame, positive and starter terminal stud, and starter housing and frame when operating the starter motor. Clean all connections and replace damaged cables or corroded clamps with new cables of equal length using equivalent diameter. Before removing the cable disconnect the negative battery bolt from the battery and both its engine and additional grounding wires. Position the new battery negative cable as originally used for RWD or A4WD then attach it to the engine before tightening the nut to 40 N.m (29 lb ft). Next install the engine harness to its stud and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft) before connecting the ground lead to the radiator support and tightening to 45 N.m (33 lb ft). Lastly connect the battery negative terminal bolt to the battery and tighten to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
