2003 Chevrolet Astro Battery Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the battery negative cable and check for excessive resistance in the battery cable on 2003 Chevrolet Astro?
A: Utilizing J 39200 Digital Multimeter to test for abnormally high resistance from poor terminal connection or stopped up cable insulation, which may result in abnormal voltage drops in starter cable and hard starting problems are the steps to take in order to replace battery negative cable. Firstly, put the transmission in park, pull the parking brakes, and chock the wheels before cutting the distributor battery feed. Take the voltage drop between negative terminal of battery to the car frame, positive terminal of battery to the starter terminal stud, and starter housing to the frame while starter runs. Any voltage drop higher than 0.5 volts means too much resistance in which cleaning of connections or replacing frayed cables or corroded clamps are needed. When removing the battery negative cable, pull it off the battery, engine and any ancillary ground leads then pull it off. For installation make sure that the new battery negative cable comes exactly where the normal one is in both RWD and A4WD vehicles and connect the end to the engine and tighten the nut to 40 N.m (29 lb ft). Install the engine harness to the stud practicing holding the nut with a torque of 25 N.m (18 lb ft), connect the ground lead to the radiator support with an additional torque of 45 N.m 33 lb ft and lastly, and then connect the battery negative terminal bolt to the battery with a nut holding a torque of 15 N.m 11 lb ft.
