2002 Chevrolet Astro Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake pads on 2002 Chevrolet Astro?
A: To replace the brake pads, one must first check the fluid level at the brake master cylinder reservoir; in case the level is above midway between maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid up to the midway level. Lift and support the vehicle, and then take off the tire and wheel assembly. As for a4wd, install and hand tighten a wheel lug nut to hold rotor. Use a large c-clamp to compress the front caliper Piston, placing it over the housing against the back of the outboard pad so that it forces the Piston to go just far enough into the caliper bore to slide the caliper off the rotor before removing the c-clamp. Do not drop the hydraulic brake flexible hose while caliper. Unbolt the caliper from the mounting bracket and hang it by raising it using heavy mechanics wire or other. To do this on the rwd, pull off the inboard Brake Pad, the retainer spring, and the outboard Brake Pad: for a4wd, while doing this, please remove the inboard as well as the outer brake pads. Check the disc brake mounting hardware and caliper dust boot for cuts, tears or deterioration and replace all the damaged parts and do not try to polish off any formations of corrosion. Ensure that the caliper bolts are free of rust or damage. In installing, bottom the Piston into the caliper bore using a c-clamp and an old Brake Pad or wooden block across the face of the Piston. For the a4wd, fit the inboard and outboard brake pads; for the rwd, attach the retainer spring to the inboard Brake Pad, and put on the inboard and outboard brake pads compressing the outboard pad ears to the caliper. Mount the caliper mounting bolts and tightening them to 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.). For the a4wd, after detaching the wheel lug nut that is holding the rotor and the hub, install it by attaching the tire fitted with the wheel. Lower the vehicle, and with the engine off, press the Brake Pedal half a way, slowly releasing it afterwards. Wait for 15 seconds and perform the same process several times until a firm Brake Pedal is achieved to allow the brake caliper pistons and brake pads seat properly. Lastly, fill the brake master cylinder to the right level, and burnish pads and rotors.
