2002 Chevrolet Astro Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Brake Calipers on 2002 Chevrolet Astro?
A: Check the master cylinder fluid before starting by looking at its level in the reservoir; no fluid needs removal if the mark is in the middle range but you must lower it if the fluid level goes above this point. First lift the vehicle and place supports under it. Then take out the tire and wheel parts. While servicing a4wd units place a wheel lug nut by hand to hold the rotor in place. Apply a large c-clamp on top of the caliper housing behind the outboard pad piston to force it into the bore space, before removing the c-clamp. Loosen the brake hose-to-caliper bolt and discard both rusty copper gaskets which may be stuck to the brake components. Use a plugged tool to block the front brake hose lead port and stop fluid loss while protecting the hose from dirt. Remove the caliper mounting bolts and then take out the caliper assembly. Also uninstall the brake pads, bushings, and sleeves for the rear wheel drive only model. Test the bolts that maintain the caliper and replace all affected components like consumable bushings. Before assembly apply quality silicone brake lubricant on both the pin bolts and retainers after cleaning them with alcohol and air drying with filtered non-lubricated air. First add brake pads and the caliper unit onto bushings and sleeves (RWD only). Mount the bolts and pad the new copper brake hose gaskets with 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.) torque. Use new copper gaskets to connect the brake hose bolt to the brake hose before tightening it to 44 nm (32 ft. Lbs.). Measure the space between the caliper and Steering Knuckle using a gage. If the calculation results to less than 0.25mm or more than 0.60mm (0.010 to 0.024in) file the Steering Knuckle and inspect for damage. Put the tire and wheel on before letting the vehicle down. Also refill brake fluid into the master cylinder and complete brake system bleeding.
