2002 Chevrolet Astro Brake Calipers Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Brake Calipers on 2002 Chevrolet Astro?
A: Start caliper brake servicing by obtaining the Piston seal installer (J 26267) and other tools. Start by taking out the caliper then drain out all brake fluid from its reservoir. Beware of placing fingers in front of the Piston during compression as it can result in severe injury. Apply only enough compressed air pressure necessary to extract the Piston from the bore but avoid damaging a broken Piston. Internal caliper padding should use clean shop towels before extracting the Piston from the bore and then removing the boot and the Piston seal to avoid bore housing scratching. Use denatured alcohol to clean the caliper body and bleeder valve before removing the valve and utilizing dry, filtered compressed air to purge brake fluid passages while also drying the components. The caliper and Piston need to be examined for appearance of corrosion and plating damage, scoring and pitting markings. Professionals should use crocus cloth to remove light caliper bore corrosion but should replace the caliper when excessive corrosion remains. Replace the Piston or caliper according to the findings of the inspection. Installation begins with applying clean brake fluid for lubrication to the new Piston seal and caliper bore and Piston. Install the Piston seal keeping it free from the groove-twist. Install the boot onto the Piston then position the Piston into the caliper bore and use the Piston seal installer (J 26267) to install the boot into the caliper housing bore. Set the bleeder valve into the caliper body before tightening it to 13 nm (115 inch lbs.).pump the brake pedal until it becomes firm before moving the vehicle while you should also check the master cylinder fluid level post-pumping and afterward reinstall the caliper.
