2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake shoes on 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: The vehicle requires lifting before commencing Brake Shoe replacement. Mark how the Brake Drum relates to the axle flange before removing the tire assembly since this marking will help achieve balance when reassembling the wheel assembly. Proceed by unscrewing the Brake Drum; during difficult removal release the parking brake while adjusting the Parking Brake Cable and tap Brake Drum rims at their inner or outer edges lightly. Use force minimally. The brake spring remover and installer (J8049) or (J29840) should be used to remove the return springs. The process continues with hold-down springs and pins removal. Raising the actuator lever will allow easy access to the actuator link which can then be taken out alongside the actuator lever as well as the lever return spring and actuator lever sleeve. Start the Brake Shoe removal process by disconnecting the cable, removing the lining assemblies and adjusting screw assembly and the strut spring and parking brake strut. Replace all parts of the secondary shoe's retaining ring and pin after removing them when signs of heat damage or wear are present. Silicone brake lubricant should be used to lubricate the six contact points of the brake shoes against the backing plate while checking the adjusting screw threading for proper rotation. You should begin parking brake lever insertion into the secondary shoe through the pin and retaining ring phase before adding the adjusting screw assembly and then the adjusting screw spring. Put the Parking Brake Cable into place before adding the shoe and lining assemblies and the parking brake strut along with its strut spring according to manufacturer instructions. After placing the actuator lever sleeve and actuator lever on the assembly, install the lever return spring next. Complete the installation with the hold-down pins and springs. Install the shoe return springs by using brake spring pliers (J8057) when the actuator link is connected and the lever is in an upward position. After Brake Drum adjustment the operator should install the wheel while following previous marked positions to complete parking brake adjustment before reattaching the tire and wheel.
