2002 Chevrolet Impala Brake Disc Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair the Brake Disc, and What Steps Should Be Followed for Refinishing on 2002 Chevrolet Impala?
A: The tools one needs to use in order to service and repair the brake disc are as follows: J-410 13 Rotor/Drum Flange Resurfacing Kit (J-41013), and, J-42450-A Hub Cleaning Kit (J-42450-A). The disc brake discs usually do not require refinishing, because there will be excessive corrosion, severe pitting; cracks, spots of heat, bluing discoloration, scoring out of the maximum allowable specification, lateral run out over the maximum allowable specifications or thickness variation and over the maximum allowable specification. Examine each disc to verify the thickness around the disc and surface wear using the J 41501 or the J 42450-A, and if rotating turns are required, clean corrosion off a wheel bearing flange using J 41013 and discs hub, J 42450-A mount the brake disc on the brake lathe with vibration dampening attachments ensured to be secured as per the manufacturer's instructions. Engaging the lathe, introduce the cutting tools to the friction surfaces of the disc and confirm the witness mark; if it is three-quarters or more around the disc, it is correctly mounted. Following the instructions of the lathe manufacturer, refurbish the disc, after each cut checking thickness and replace disc if its thickness goes beyond minimum limit after refurbishment. For a non-directional finish, use the suggested speed settings, use moderate pressure with 120 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper, or a sanding block with 150 grit aluminum oxide and precede the removal of disc from the lathe with the clean-up of friction surfaces using denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake cleaner.
