2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Coil Springs Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair Front Coil Springs and Shock Absorber on 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: You need these tools to work on and fix the suspension strut: you will need the holding fixture (J 3289-20), strut compressor (J 34013-B), damper rod clamp (J 34013-20), alignment rod (J 34013-197), strut rod nut socket (J 42991), strut compressor lower adapter (J 34013-971), and strut compressor upper adapter (J-34013-972). First, take the strut off the vehicle, and fit it into the strut compressor (J 34013-B) with the strut compressor lower adapter (J 34013-971), strut compressor upper adapter (J-34013-972), and holding fixture (J 3289-20). Twist the compressor forcing screw to squeeze the spring a little. Have a 45 torx socket on the strut shaft to keep it in place, then use the strut rod nut socket (J 42991) to take out the mount nut. Use the alignment rod (J 34013-197) to slide the strut shaft out of the upper mount, then loosen the compressor screw so you can take the strut and spring out. Make sure you put the strut mount on right, then assemble it in the strut compressor using the adapters and strap the strut compressor (J 34013-20) onto the strut shaft. Put the spring on the strut, align it properly, and fit the upper locking pin. Hold the alignment rod (J 34013-197) against the strut shaft and turn the compressor screw clockwise until you can see the threads. After putting on the washer and nut, remove the strut compressor (J 34013-20) from the strut shaft and use the strut rod nut socket (J 42991) to tighten the strut mount nut to 85 nm (63 ft. Lbs.) while you keep the strut shaft steady with a 45 torx socket. After that, take the strut out of the strut compressor and place it onto the vehicle.
