2002 GMC Envoy Rack and Pinion Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot on 2002 GMC Envoy?
A: First obtain these tools to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot at the vehicle's location: keystone clamp pliers (J22610). Keystone clamp pliers (J22610). Start by unscrewing the outer tie rod followed by the Rack And Pinion gear removal. Both inner tie rod and all boot components need replacement when performing a replacement. Discard the small seal retaining clamp from the Rack and Pinion Boot using side cutters while being cautious to keep from cutting boot ends or inserting a screwdriver between tie rod and boot to prevent damage to the gear assembly. Extract the Rack and Pinion Boot from the gear by pulling it firmly then dispose of it. When installing the new Rack and Pinion Boot insert grease into the boot ribs before placing the large seal retaining clamp onto the boot. Place the boot over the inner Tie Rod End while guiding the boot's arrows to match the gear housing's range. Install the new small seal retaining clamp over the boot then push the boot to center of the gear assembly until it properly fits into the inner tie rod retaining groove. Avoid any twisting or puckering of the boot during this process. Use keystone clamp pliers (J22610) to crimp the large seal retaining clamp that secures boot along with the small seal retaining clamp on the inner tie rod assembly. After completing these steps reinstall the Rack And Pinion gear and the outer tie rod.
