• Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2003 Buick Century?

  A: Remove the engine front cover in order to replace the Timing Chain and sprockets. Rotate the Crankshaft and ensure that the timing marks are lining up: the Timing Chain dampener to the Crankshaft sprocket and the Timing Chain dampener to the camshaft sprocket locator hole. Then, strip off the camshaft sprocket bolt, the camshaft sprocket with the Timing Chain, crankshaft sprocket, and the Timing Chain dampener bolts. Then, remove Timing Chain dampener and if necessary, the camshaft thrust plate screws before you remove the camshaft thrust plate. For installation if camshaft thrust plate was removed re install and scutinize it with screws tightened to 10 nm (89 inch lbs). Mount the Timing Chain dampener and bolts to the block and torque it to 21 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) and now install the Crankshaft sprocket. Add engine oil supplement (EOS) gm p/n 1052367 (Canadian P/N 992869) or a substitute to the thrust surface of the sprocket. Placing the camshaft sprocket on a chain dropped over it, install the chain to Crankshaft gear with the Crankshaft timing mark lining-up with the chain timing mark at bottom of the Timing Chain dampener. With the camshaft sprocket clamped, install the Timing Chain to the Crankshaft gear and align up the timing mark on the camshaft gear with the associated timing mark on top of the Timing Chain dampener. Mount the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft, draw it at the mounting bolt, install the camshaft sprocket bolt, and tighten it to 140 nm (103 ft. Lbs.). Finally, cover the Crankshaft and camshaft sprocket with engine oil and install the engine front cover.
