Timing Chain used in Buick Century cars act in a way of ensuring that the correct timing between the movement of the crankshaft and that of the camshaft is achieved to allow proper timing of the valves to deliver optimum performance. This metal chain is located at the front of the engine and has to be lubricated; is most common in higher displacement engines. Metal timing chains have taken so much popularity since early 1990s especially because of these features; they do not wear out often and therefore require frequent replacement as the rubber timing belts do. They do not suffer significant wear but can develop problems around the oil and with tensioner and chain guides, which can be signaled by a rattling sound originating from the front of the engine. For pushrod engines a short chain drive is preferable to gear drives for low noise and low wear, it is a good option for use on the Buick Century car's engine.

Buick Century Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on Buick Century?
    A:
Service and repair of the Timing Chain starts by using crankshaft sprocket installer (J38612) to install the crankshaft sprocket. Use prelube gm p/n 1052365 or its equivalent on the crankshaft sprocket thrust surface before installing the Timing Chain dampener along with its bolts. Torque the Timing Chain dampener bolt to 21 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Position the crankshaft timing mark to match the timing designation found on the bottom of the Timing Chain dampener . Begin by gripping the camshaft sprocket with the Timing Chain in position then install Timing Chain directly onto crankshaft gear. Next position the camshaft gear timing mark to match the timing mark on the Timing Chain dampener while making sure the camshaft dowel passes through its hole on the camshaft sprocket. Use the mounting bolt to draw the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft before applying engine oil to both the crankshaft and sprocket and tightening the bolt to 140 nm (103 ft. Lbs.).
