2001 Buick Century Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2001 Buick Century?
A: To remove the engine front cover, first remove it. To replace the Timing Chain and sprockets, the engine front cover should be removed. Turn the Crankshaft with the timing marks in synthesis: the Timing Chain dampener to the Crankshaft sprocket and the Timing Chain dampener to the Camshaft sprocket locator hole. Next, take off the Camshaft sprocket bolt and the Camshaft sprocket in Timing Chain. Remove the Crankshaft sprocket with the aid of the Crankshaft sprocket remover (J 5825-A) and then move on to the removal of the Timing Chain dampener bolts and the Timing Chain dampener. If required, take out Camshaft thrust plate bolts and the Camshaft thrust plate. Clean and inspect the Timing Chain and gears before installing. Mount the Camshaft thrust plate and its bolts, tighten to 10 nm (89 inch lbs). Install the Crankshaft sprocket using Crankshaft sprocket installer (J 38612), and then remove installer. Use engine oil supplement (EOS) gm p/n 1052367 or equal on the surface of sprocket thrust. Mount the Timing Chain dampener to the block and fasten the dampener bolts to 21 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Hydrate the Camshaft sprocket retaining the chain hanging down, integrate the chain the with Crankshaft Gear with reference to the Crankshaft timing mark with the bottom timing mark of the Timing Chain dampener. Perform the same process for the Camshaft gear by aligning the timing mark on the Camshaft gear with the timing mark on top of the Timing Chain dampener. Put the Camshaft sprocket bolt and pull sprocket to Camshaft then tighten bolt to 140 nm (103 ft. Lbs.). Finally, apply a layer of engine oil to the Crankshaft and Camshaft sprocket, and fix the engine front cover.
