- Q: How to replace the outer CV Joint and seal on the wheel drive shaft on 2003 Buick Park Avenue?A: Collected instruments to replace the wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal include: snap ring pliers (J8059), seal camp tool (J35910), and small swage tool (J41048). First, take off the large seal retaining clamp from the CV Joint using a side cutter and throwing it. Use a hand grinder to make a cut through the swage ring for removal. Pull the halfshaft outboard seal apart from the outer race of CV Joint at a large diameter and slide the seal off the joint across the halfshaft bar. Clean grease off the face of the CV Joint inner race, then, with the snap ring pliers (J8059), separate the ears on the race retaining ring and take CV Joint assembly off the halfshaft bar. Take the old outboard seal out of the picture and use a brass drift to gently hit the CV Joint cage while it is tilted to get the six chrome alloy balls out. Clean your inner and outer race assemblies, CV Joint cage, and chrome alloy balls with cleaning solvent and make sure everything is scraped so all old grease and dirt is gone, and then dry everything out. Check the CV Joint assembly for any abnormal wear, cracks, or damage and replace the damaged parts. Clean the halfshaft bar using a wire brush to remove rust around the seal mounting region. For the purposes of installation, fit a new swage ring onto the neck of the outboard seal and do not swage it yet; slide the outboard seal onto the halfshaft bar and fit it in the seal groove. Swage the ring using small swage tool (J41048), with proper alignment of the outboard seal, halfshaft, and swage ring. Insert and tighten the bolts by using your hands until the bolts are tight then alternate tightening till the bolts are bottomed. Intolerance: check for deformity of the swaged ring and learn to swage if necessary. Put a light coat of grease from the service kit into the ball grooves of the key races: the inner and outer ride, then feed the inner race into the cage, making sure it aligns with the outer race. Put in the chrome balls, fill the CV Joint with grease and check if the outboard seal is in the right shape. Lubricate both the outboard seal lips and move the large scsi clamp over the cv racing and tighten to 174 nm (130 ft. Lbs.) using the seal camp tool (J35910), inspecting the gap dimension on the clamp ear until it is 2.3 mm (3/32 inch).
