    Q:
How to replace the outer CV Joint and seal on Buick Park Avenue? Posted by Customer
    A:
Using the side cutter remove the large seal retaining clamp from the CV joint alongside the small clamp from the halfshaft bar before moves on to replace the wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal. Disassemble the outboard seal from the CV joint outer race while moving it down the bar surface. Start by removing the CV joint assembly from the bar after you clean the grease off the CV joint inner race face with snap ring pliers (J 8059) used to spread the race retaining ring ears. Use a brass drift along with a hammer to tap lightly on the CV joint cage so the chrome alloy balls can be removed while working on the bar's seal. The cleaning process must include thorough application of cleaning solvent to remove old grease and contaminants from inner and outer race assemblies and the CV joint cage except balls which must be cleaned separately before parts dry. To build the assembly you need to fit the new swage ring to the joint seal small end followed by placement of both components onto the halfshaft bar. Position the drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048) in a vise for securing the assembly which must avoid creating pinch points on the seal. Tighten the J 41048 ball bolts alternatively until just tight before setting the seal and swage ring at 180 degree intervals. Use a thin amount of service kit grease to coat the ball grooves on both races before carefully putting the inner race into the cage with correct alignment to the outer race. Add chrome balls into the CV joint space while spreading grease inside and confirming the outboard seal forms a proper shape. The installation of the outboard seal requires using drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) with a breaker bar and torque wrench to crimp the large seal retaining clamp onto the CV joint outer race. Maintain a 2.60 mm (0.102 inch) gap dimension on the clamp ear while tightening to 176 Nm (130 ft.lbs.).

    Q:
How to replace the outer CV Joint and seal on the wheel drive shaft on Cadillac DeVille? Posted by Customer
    A:
To change the wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal, the larger seal retaining clamp must be cut off the CV Joint with a side cutter and discarded as well as cutting off the smaller seal retaining clamp on the halfshaft bar. Remove the outboard seal and CV Joint outer race and remove the grease from CV Joint inner race . J 8059 snap ring pliers (J 8059) should be used to spread the ears on the race retaining ring and remove the CV Joint assembly from the bar. Remove the seal from the bar and give the taphammer lightly using a brass drift and hammer with the cage of CV Joint to remove all six chrome alloy balls . Keep CV Joint cage and inner race perpendicular with outer race and windows in alignment with the outer race lands. Clean the inner and outer race assemblies, as well as CV Joint cage and balls, using cleaning solvent, so there is no trace of the old grease and contaminants, and then dry the parts. For installation, insert the new swage ring onto the small end of the l joint seal and slip them over the halfshaft bar. To prevent the seal neck to line up improperly, let the new j 41048 small swage tool (J 41048) be mounted into a vise and secure the outboard end of the halfshaft assembly with it. Then tighten the bolts just hand-tight, alternating each bolt until both ends are bottomed. Get hold of a light coat of grease from the service kit to apply on the ball grooves of both inner and outer races, and then set the inner race into the cage without misplacing. Install the cage and inner race into the outer race and put the chrome balls in while packing CV Joint with grease and make sure the outboard seal is in the right shape. Finally push the large diameter of the outboard seal over the CV Joint outer race and crimp the seal retaining clamp using j 35910 earred clamp tool (J 35910), a breaker bar , and a torque wrench to a specification of 176 nm(130 ft. Lbs.), checking the gap dimension on the clamp ear to ensure proper fit.
