- Q: What Tools Are Required for Replacing the CV Joint Inner and Seal on 2006 Cadillac DTS?A: A replacement of wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal requires snap ring pliers (J 8059) drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) along with drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048). The complete tool kit for this repair job includes snap ring pliers (J 8059) and drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) and drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048). First examine the transmission seal surface of the halfshaft for corrosion then use a 320 grit cloth to clean it if it exists. The manual grinder should cut through the swage ring yet maintain all functionality of the tripot housing. Discard the large boot retaining clamp but avoid damaging the wheel drive shaft inboard seal during removal. To access the trilobal tripot bushing of the halfshaft inboard boot users must separate it from the trilobal tripot bushing before moving the boot to remove the housing which contains the tripot joint spider and halfshaft bar. Remove the trilobal tripot bushing and the lower spacer ring before you can slide off the tripot joint spider assembly from the halfshaft bar. Use solvent to clean tripot balls, needle rollers, and housing as well as remove all previous grease materials and examine components for any indication of damage. Install the new small boot clamp onto the joint boot before placing it properly onto the halfshaft bar. Position the drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048) in a vise before inserting the inboard halfshaft end and boot neck alignment followed by bolt tightening. Snap ring pliers (J 8059) enables installation of the spacer ring before sliding the tripot joint spider assembly toward it. Then install the halfshaft bar retaining ring. Put grease inside the halfshaft inboard boot then fill the housing while making sure the trilobal tripot bushing extends to the housing face. Post the larger boot retaining clamp on the halfshaft inboard boot before sliding the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly. Verify that the boot maintains its correct shape. Use drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) to crimp the large seal retaining clamp against the specified torque while checking its dimension. The joint requires a complete stroke cycle for grease distribution.
