- Q: What tools are required to service and repair the CV Joint Boot for the Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Seal Replacement (FE1 / FE3) on 2007 Cadillac DTS?A: In servicing and repairing the constant velocity joint boot, i.e., for the wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal replacement (FE1 / FE3), the tools needed are are: snap ring pliers (J 8059), drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910), and drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048). Start with the examination of the transmission sealing surface of the halfshaft for corrosion and clean using 320 grit cloth if needed. Use the hand grinder to cut at the swage ring without compromising the tripot housing. Remove and discard large boot retaining clamp without cutting through the inboard wheel drive shaft seal. Screw the halfshaft inboard boot off the trilobal tripot bushing, slide the boot out of the way from the joint jointly and remove the housing from the tripot joint spider and halfshaft bar. Remove the trilobal tripot bushing and lower spacer ring, then clean the tripot balls, needle rollers, and housing with solvent cleaning out all old grease and dirt. Examine the tripot joint spider assembly, housing, and needle rollers for any signs of damage or wear. For assembly, mount a new small boot clamp on the joint boot and slide it onto the half shaft bar and mount it in the boot groove properly. Mount the drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048) in a vise and align the halfshaft assembly; tighten the bolts. While wore snap ring pliers(J 8059), install spacer ring at half shaft bar and slide tripot joint spider assembly toward the spacer ring then install the half shaft bar retaining ring. Lubricate the halfshaft inboard boot with grease and repack the housing, being sure that the trilobal tripot bushing is flush with the housing face. Mount the larger boot retaining clamp on the halfshaft inboard boot then slide through the housing and over the tripot joint spider assembly while placing the boot lip into the groove. Carefully pry a thin flat blunt tool to equalize pressure and align and crimp the large seal retaining clamp using drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) torque to the specified torque. Finally, fully stroke the joint several times to spread the grease.
