- Q: How to replace the inner CV Joint and seal on 2002 Cadillac DeVille?A: The replacement of wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal requires these essential tools: you need snap ring pliers (J8059) alongside drive axle seal clamp pliers (J35910) and drive axle swage ring clamp (J41048). Snap ring pliers (J8059), drive axle seal clamp pliers (J35910), and drive axle swage ring clamp (J41048). Check the transmission sealing surface of the halfshaft for corrosion then use 320 grit cloth to clean it if present. Cut through the swage ring with a hand grinder yet maintain safety of the tripot housing. First cut through the wheel drive shaft inboard seal by removing and disposing of the large boot retaining clamp without damaging the inner seal. Set the halfshaft inboard boot apart from its trilobal tripot bushing then pull the boot away while extracting the housing from the tripot joint spider and halfshaft bar. Pressurized cleaning solution must be used to remove all dirt and oil from trilobal tripot bushing, tripot balls, needle rollers, and housing. Check for damage on the tripot joint spider assembly and housing and needle rollers. Hesive boot clamps receive a new unit before installation onto the halfshaft bar while maintaining correct alignment throughout the procedure. Place the swollen ring clamp (J41048) to a vise and position the halfshaft assembly before tightening the bolts. After installing the spacer ring with snap ring pliers (J8059) move the tripot joint spider assembly toward the ring. Insert the halfshaft bar retaining ring while applying grease to both the inboard boot and the halfshaft housing. After seating the trilobal tripot bushing against the housing face install it before applying the larger boot retaining clamp. Position the housing carefully on top of the tripot joint spider assembly while checking that the halfshaft inboard boot exhibits the correct shape. Seal retaining clamp crimping requires drive axle seal clamp pliers (J35910) to achieve specified torque while checking dimensional requirements.
