- Q: How to replace the outer CV Joint and seal on 2001 Buick Park Avenue?A: In order to replace the wheel drive shaft outer joint.exchange the outer wheel drive shafts joint to seal, bring the necessary tools as: j35910 (Erred Clamp Tool), j41048 (Small Swage Tool), and j8059 (Snap Ring Pliers). First, strip off the big seal retaining clamp from the CV Joint by using a side cutter and throw it away, after that something similar on the half shaft bar. Take the outer race away from the CV Joint and slide it off the bar . Apply j 8059 to stretch the ears on the race retaining ring 2 in order to remove the CV Joint assembly from the bar 1 . Clean the grease from the CV Joint inner race . Unseal the bar and tap on the CV Joint cage with a brass drift and hammer to extract all the six chrome alloy balls. Build up the CV Joint cage that is and to the inner race align windows with the lands of outer race. Clean all components with cleaning solvent and check it so that no old greases or contaminants are left, and dry all parts. To assemble, the new swage ring should be slid and bolted on to the small end of the joint seal while the joint 1 is placed on to the halfshaft bar. Clamp j 41048 in a vise to hold the outboard end of the halfshaft assembly in place making sure that the seal neck lines up. Note: alternately, tighten bolts of j 41048 until snug, then put a light coat of grease from service kit on the ball grooves of inner and outer races. Put the inner race into the cage, make sure they are properly aligned, and then put the cage and inner race in the outer race. The chrome balls should be inserted but packing the CV Joint with grease and ensure the outboard seal looks well-shaped. Lastly, slide the large diameter of the outboard seal over the CV Joint outer race and crimp the seal retaining clamp using j 35910, a breaker bar, and a torque wrench to 176 nm (130 ft. Lbs.) and to verify that the gap dimension of the clamp ear is within specifications.
