2003 Chevrolet Express 3500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2003 Chevrolet Express 3500?
A: The crankshaft rear oil seal replacement process requires the engine Flywheel removal followed by removal of the crankshaft rear oil seal from the rear cover. The installation of the new oil seal requires removal of a Flywheel spacer (if applicable) and avoidance of coating the inside diameter of the oil seal or the crankshaft surface since the original crankshaft rear oil seal should not be used. Use new engine oil to lubricate the outside diameter (OD) of the new oil seal as well as the rear cover oil seal bore but make sure to stay clear of the crankshaft surface area. Position the j 41479 tapered cone and bolts at the crankshaft rear before tightening the bolts just to the point of snugging but no further. Insert the rear cover oil seal onto the tapered cone while directing it to enter the rear cover bore. Use the tapered cone of j 41479 until the tool reaches the oil seal then align the oil seal inside the tool. You should turn the handle of the tool clockwise until the seal reaches and stops at the rear cover bore. In the last step, install the engine Flywheel after taking out the j 41479 tool.
