• Q: What tools are required to service and repair the valve guide seal, replace the valve stem oil seal, and valve spring on 2003 Chevrolet Express 3500?

  A: To service and repair the Valve Stem Oil Seal and change Valve Stem Oil Seal and valve spring the following tools are necessary: spark plug port adapter (J 22794), valve spring compressor (J 38606), Valve Stem Oil Seal installer (J 42078). Start with removing the valve Rocker Arm and unplug the wire leading into the Spark Plug at the Spark Plug by twisting each plug wire boot 1/2 turn and only pull on the boot to remove the wire. Change the spark plugs by getting them out of the Cylinder Head set when the engine is at room temperature, tightening them to a 1 or 2 turns state then brushing or put air blast on them rid off of dirt or debris on it so as to fully eject the Spark Plug. Place the Spark Plug port adapter (J 22794) into the Spark Plug hole, connect an air hose, and use compressed air to keep the valves in place. Apply the valve spring compressor (J 38606) to compressed valve spring, thereafter remove valve stem key, when releasing valve spring compressing tension cautiously take out the compressor, valve spring cap and valve spring. Clean the Cylinder Head valve spring seat or shim region, oiled the valve guide and Valve Stem Oil Seal with unclean engine oil, and the Valve Stem Oil Seal and shim. Next, pull off the valve spring and valve spring cap, compress the valve spring once more, this time using the valve spring compressor (J 38606), and install the valve keys, ensuring they are seated into the groove of the valve stem. Carefully release the valve spring pressure and take the compressor off and tap the end of the valve keys in the valve stem with a plastic faced hammer if necessary in order to seat the keys. Last of all, you remove the Spark Plug port adapter, hand start the Spark Plug, tighten it to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.) and position the Spark Plug Wires to the Ignition Coil and on the Spark Plug and inspect it for a good fit installed, before replacing whatever loose boot exists before you replace the valve Rocker Arm.
