2003 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the ABS Control Module on 2003 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The replacement process for brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) starts with battery removal followed by battery tray deletion where you should mark down brake pipe positions before reinstallation. The vehicle maintenance continues with disconnecting caliper and Wheel Cylinder brake pipes from the bpmv while protecting their ends with covering material before detaching master cylinder brake pipes from the bpmv similarly. Mount the vehicle on a safe hoist and remove both the front engine splash shield together with the left engine splash shield. Use the cpa tool to disconnect the ebcm connector from its position before unlocking its tab and opening the sliding connector cover to remove the ebcm harness from the control module. The bpmv retaining nut must be removed before extracting the ebcm/bpmv assembly from the vehicle to separate the ebcm from the bpmv. To install this system start by placing the ebcm on the bpmv while tightening four screws to 5 nm (44 inch lbs.) then put the ebcm/bpmv combination back in the vehicle with the bpmv retaining nut fastened to 10 nm (7 ft. Lbs.). Connect the ebcm harness connector to the ebcm followed by lock tab depression; move the sliding connector cover to its locked position and install the cpa. Ensure the correct connection of brake pipes to the bpmv because only a scan tool or performing an antilock stop can detect wheel lockup. After this, reinstall the left and front engine splash shields, lower the vehicle. Loosen the fittings on the master cylinder brake pipes then attach them to the bpmv before tightening them to 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Afterward attach the caliper and Wheel Cylinder brake pipes to the bpmv with the same torque requirements. The final step should include reinstalling both battery tray and battery before executing the diagnostic system check - abs.
