2003 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear Drive Shaft on 2003 Chevrolet Suburban 1500?
A: The process of rear propeller shaft replacement starts with precise marking of driveline components relative to the propeller shaft as well as axles before disassembly to ensure proper reassembly of everything in its original positions. It is necessary to raise your vehicle while marking both the propeller shaft against the pinion yoke of the rear axle and against the transmission or Transfer Case. The process begins by taking out the bolts as well as yoke retainers from the rear axle pinion yoke. The injection joints need protection against damage which means you should never hit the yoke ears and you must abstain from using tools between the Universal Joint and the yoke. You should pull the propeller shaft toward the front to disconnect it from the rear axle pinion yoke followed by pushing it toward the back to disconnect from the transmission or Transfer Case before removing the propeller shaft from the vehicle. The Slip Yoke splines should receive lubricant treatment using gm p/n 12345879 (Canadian P/N 10953511) or equivalent oil which meets gm specification 9985830 (RWD w/Automatic Transmission). Place the propeller shaft within the transmission or Transfer Case while matching the reference marks observed during removal and install it to the rear axle pinion yoke by matching these reference marks. Install all yoke retainers along with their bolts before tightening the retainer bolts to 25 nm (119 ft. Lbs.). Finally, lower the vehicle to the ground.
