2003 Chevrolet Tracker Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain tensioner on the crankshaft on 2003 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: To replace the Timing Chain tensioner from the Crankshaft, you have to remove the tensioner first by disconnecting the negative Battery Cable and removal of the Timing Chain housing. Pull out the Spark Plug to make the rotation of the Crankshaft more convenient for aligning the timing marks. Check the timing marks accurately before disassembling by turning the Crankshaft until the number 1 cylinder at the top dead center (TDC) on compression stroke, key way of the Crankshaft align with timing mark on the engine block, arrow on the idler sprocket points upwards and the guide pins on the camshaft sprockets line up with the notch on the Cylinder Head. Although the tensioner has been removed, do not turn the Crankshaft or camshaft. Take off the 2 bolts and the Crankshaft Timing Chain tensioner, and then check the damage present in the latch and teeth of tensioner, and verify its proper operation. To install, have the back under the latch press the plunger down and use a retainer (paperclip or some other kind of tool to hold the plunger in place. Install the Timing Chain tension, and tighten the 2 bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs), whereas, retainer removed. Turn the Crankshaft 2 revolutions to straighten the keyway on the Crankshaft with the timing mark on the engine block, and make sure the guide pins on the camshafts align with the notches on the Cylinder Head. Apply engine oil on timing chains, tensioner, guides, and sprockets. Replace the spark plugs, then attach with tightened 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.), then attach the Timing Chain housing, and reconnect negative cable from the battery.
