2003 GMC Envoy Rocker Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the valve rocker arm and valve lash adjuster on 2003 GMC Envoy?
A: Refrain from valve Rocker Arm replacement until you remove the Camshaft cover as well as the exhaust and intake sprocket bolts. Place the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222) under the Cylinder Head while adjusting its horizontal bolts for holding tension on the Camshaft sprockets to safeguard Timing Chain components. Separate the Camshaft sprockets with Timing Chain from their positions by using proper placement of the Camshaft caps in a rack until reinstallation. Proceed to remove Camshaft cap bolts and Camshaft caps and finally the camshafts from the vehicle. After removal sequence the valve rocker arms together with valve lash adjusters into their specific locations of use. Sever all valve rocker arms and their corresponding valve lash adjusters. The valve lash adjusters require engine oil lubrication before installing them at their factory locations. The roller of each valve Rocker Arm should receive lubrication before these components are placed in their original positions and the Camshaft journals are coated with engine oil. Insert the camshafts to their original location before setting the Camshaft caps into their original journals while torquing the Camshaft cap bolts to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Insert the Camshaft sprockets back onto their respective camshafts before taking out the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222). When installing the intake Camshaft sprocket bolt apply 20 nm torque first but finish with 100 degrees using the torque angle meter (J 36660-A). For the exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt, tighten to 25 nm at first followed by adding 135 degrees using the same meter. The first moment of closing the exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt requires 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque followed by a final tightening process employing the torque angle meter (J 36660-A) for 135°. Finally, install the Camshaft cover.
