• Q: How to replace the water pump on a 4.2L engine on 2003 GMC Envoy?

  A: Before working on a 4.2l engine Water Pump replacement you need to drain coolant and remove the fan assembly plus shroud and Drive Belt. Use the fan clutch wrench (J 41240) to protect the Water Pump Pulley and uninstall the Water Pump Pulley bolts before removing the j 41240 and its associated pulley part. First apply a wrench to the Water Pump bolts then remove them to pull out the Water Pump. Thoroughly check the Water Pump before putting on a new gasket if it passes inspection. Place the new Water Pump Gasket and put the Water Pump in place while tightening the bolts to 4 nm (35 lb in) first then 10 nm (89 lb in). Insert the fan clutch wrench (J 41240) onto the Water Pump Pulley before tightening its bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Follow by putting on the Drive Belt first and replacing the fan and shroud after you remove item j 41240. End by placing the recommended coolant into the cooling system and searching for any liquid leaks.
