  A: Starting the Timing Cover replacement requires a sequence of removing the Water Pump and crankshaft balancer followed by Oil Pan-to-Timing Cover bolts and Timing Cover bolts to finally extract the Timing Cover with its gasket. Discard the old gasket when you finish. Before installation of the Timing Cover maintain safety protocols during inspection while refraining from reusing the crankshaft front oil seal or Timing Cover gasket and abstain from using any sealant on the Timing Cover gasket unless instructed. Place a 5 mm (0.20 inch) bead of gm U.S. P/N 12378190 (or equivalent) sealant that is 20 mm (0.80 inch) long at the Oil Pan to engine block junction before installing the new Timing Cover gasket and cover. Tighten the Timing Cover bolts and Oil Pan-to-Timing Cover bolts until just firm but do not increase the torque beyond recommended specifications. The j 41476 front and rear cover alignment (J 41476) tool serves to zero in on the crankshaft front oil seal placement by using its tapered legs which reach both machined alignment surfaces on the Timing Cover. Tighten the Oil Pan to Timing Cover bolts and engine Timing Cover bolts to a torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) after securing the crankshaft balancer bolt. First remove j 41476 tool before installing a new crankshaft front oil seal that leads to the Water Pump reinstallation.
