- Q: How to Replace Rear Brake Calipers on 2004 Chevrolet Astro?A: To replace the rear brake caliper, first check the amount of fluid in the brake master cylinder reservoir; if it is half way between the maximum full position and the minimum acceptable positions no escape is required but if it is higher then lower it to half way position. Lift the vehicle and remove the tire and wheel assembly. Compress the brake caliper pistons by placing a large c-clamp over the top of the housing and against the back of the outboard pad, twisting until it's full on pistons. Clean out the end of the brake hose and seal the exposed brake pipe end off with a rubber cap or plug to avoid losing and contamination of the brake fluid. Pull the brake hose to caliper bolt and throw away the 2 copper brake hose gaskets; they can still be glued to the caliper housing or brake hose. Subsequently, undo the caliper guide pin bolts and the brake caliper must be removed from the vehicle, and it is to be inspected for the caliper assembly. If new brake pads are installed, use a c-clamp to compress the pistons down into the bottom of the caliper bores, with pistons and caliper boots protected with an old Brake Pad, metal plate or piece of wood. Raise the inner edge of the caliper boots next to both pistons with a small flat-bladed tool to clear out any trapped air underneath the boots to their level underneath the pistons' faces. Mount the brake caliper on the mounting bracket and eliminate all that remains of the original adhesive patch and clean with brake parts washer the threads on the bolt bolt gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488). Install brake caliper mounting bolts and tighten the guide pin bolts to 42 nm (31 ft. Lbs.). Cover or plug a brake hose fitting with a new rubber cap, place 2 new copper brake hose gaskets, and attach the brake hose by tightening brake hose to caliper bolt to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Lastly, bleed hydraulic brake system, replace tire and wheel assembly, and lower vehicle.
