- Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2005 Chevrolet Astro?A: To replace the rear brake caliper, first check the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir; if it is mid-way between the max-full point and the min allowable level then nothing is to pulled off but if above, pull it down to the mid-way point. Lift and support the vehicle and take off tire and wheel assembly. Compress the pistons on the Brake Calipers with a large c-clamp placed over the top of the caliper housing against the back of the outboard pad and tighten it up until the pistons are fully retracted. Clean the end of the brake hose and place a rubber cap or plug in order to avoid fluid loss, and contamination. Take off brake hose to caliper bolt and throw away 2 copper brake hose gaskets. Then, pull out the caliper guide bolts and unmount the brake caliper. Inspect the caliper assembly. When perendale an installation or on installing new brake pads, apply a c-clamp to compress the pistons to the bottom of the caliper bores with protection using an old brake, metal plate or wooden block. Hold a small flat-bladed tool to the inside edg eof the caliper boots next to both pistons and raise them to release any trapped air and to get the boots below the pistons. Mount the brake caliper to the mounting bracket, removing any existing adhesive patch and thoroughly cleaning the bolt threads with brake parts cleaner. Apply threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canada P/N 10953488) to the threads, and then install and tighten the brake caliper guide pin bolts to 42 nm (31 lb ft). Remove rubber cap or plug from the brake hose fitting end, fit 2 new copper brake hose gasket and attach brake hose at the caliper by tightening brake hose to caliper bolt with 40 nm (30 lb ft). Finally, bleed the hydraulic brake system, mount the tire and wheel assembly, and lower the vehicle.
