2004 Chevrolet Aveo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the piston, connecting rod, and bearing on 2004 Chevrolet Aveo?
A: The replacement operation for Piston and connecting rod and bearing requires the Piston pin remover/installer set (J 24086-B) and the angle meter km-470-b angular torque gage (J 45059) tools. The first step starts with disconnecting the Cylinder Head along with intake and exhaust manifolds while proceeding to withdraw the Oil Pan and its oil suction pipe bolts to extract the piping. Place the Piston at its lowest possible position then record the connecting rod cap position before unthreading all bolts and removing the parts which include the cap and the lower connecting Rod Bearing. Ridge reaming needs to take place on the cylinder wall after removing the upper Piston connecting Rod Bearing. First handle the Piston with care because of worn Piston rings before removing it from the engine block and utilizing an expander tool to expand and remove the Piston rings. Use the Piston pin remover/installer set (J 24086-B) to eliminate the Piston pin from its position between the Piston and connecting rod assembly before splitting the Piston from the connecting rod. Place the notch on the connecting rod with the Piston and add the Piston pin guide before coating the pin with clean lubricant. Insert the components using the Piston pin remover/installer set (J 24086-B). The technician should choose new rings then measure their gaps and file any extra material with a feeler gauge when needed. I will measure the Piston Ring side clearance before moving to different rings when the fit does not work. Use a Piston Ring expander to install all Piston Ring components which include the oil ring and expander along with the second oil ring and the second compression ring and top compression ring in their proper grooves until rings reach the correct fit without over-expanding. When installing the Piston through a ring compressor assisted by a wood handle guide the lower connecting rod end while applying engine oil to both the cylinder wall and Piston rings until the Piston is completely inside. Additionally position the pistons oil ring gaps and compression ring gaps with respect to the Piston notch before starting the engine. The last step involves installing both connecting rod components including bearings before tightening the cap bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). The tightening process should be completed using the angle meter km-470-b angular torque gage (J 45059) by rotating the bolts one turn of 30 degrees followed by one turn of 15 degrees. Reinstall the oil suction pipe and bolts at 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) torque before installing the Oil Pan and then securing the Cylinder Head with mounted intake and exhaust manifolds.
