2004 Chevrolet Express 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rocker Shaft Spring Kit and valve stem oil seal on 2004 Chevrolet Express 1500?
A: First, to replace the Valve Stem Oil Seal and valve spring, disconnect the valve Rocker Arm and the Spark Plug wire from the Spark Plug by twisting each plug wire boot 1/2 turn and pull only on boot. Take off the spark plugs from the Cylinder Head, when the engine is at the room temperature, loosen the Spark Plug to one or two turns and then clean the Spark Plug of dust and debris by using a brush or air blast and then remove the Spark Plug. Fix the Spark Plug port adapter (J22794) to the Spark Plug opening and to an Air Hose that would be used to apply compressed air for holding the valves in place. Use the valve spring compressor (J38606) to compress the valve spring, take off valve stem keys, and remove valve spring tension carefully. After removing the valve spring compressor ( J38606 ), take out the valve spring cap; its valve spring followed by Valve Stem Oil Seal; shim ( 1,5 ). Clean the seat of the Cylinder Head valve spring or the shim, lubricate the valve guide and Valve Stem Oil Seal with the fresh engine oil, and replace the Valve Stem Oil Seal and shim (1,5). Next, install the valve spring and the valve spring cap, then compress the valve spring with the help of the valve spring compressor (J38606) and install the valve keys with grease to hold them, and make sure they properly seat in the groove of the valve stem. Unfasten the pressure off the valve spring, keeping the valve keys in place, and take off the valve spring compressor (J38606). If needed, strike the end of the valve stem using a plastic faced hammer to seat the keys. Remove Spark Plug port adapter (J22794) from the Spark Plug port and hand start the Spark Plug and tighten 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.)". Lastly, tightened the Spark Plug Wires at the Ignition Coil then the Spark Plug wire to the Spark Plug then made sure the wires are well tight before fixing the loose boot then assembling the valve Rocker Arm.
