2004 Chevrolet Impala Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2004 Chevrolet Impala?
A: First, lift and support the vehicle for the replacement of the intermediate Steering Shaft. Remove the tire and wheel assembly and install the Steering Column anti- rotation pin (J 42640) in the bottom of the Steering Column. Use the top pinch bolt alignment tool or push on the intermediate Steering Shaft to align the upper pinch bolt by reaching the lower pinch bolt. Make sure the front wheel locks and the Steering Column is in the lock position to eliminate wheel misalignment & damage to the sir coil assembly. Meanwhile, refrain from using a wrench to loosen the low pinch bolt that is used to secure the power steering gear stub shaft and remove it. This will also give you an opportunity to remove the intermediate Steering Shaft from its power steering gear stub shaft. Lower the vehicle and remove the instrument panel left insulator. Reroute the intermediate Steering Shaft seal to free the upper pinch bolt and remove the upper pinch bolt from the intermediate Steering Shaft and unhook the shaft from the Steering Column. As for the installation - put the intermediate Steering Shaft in its place and use the upper pinch bolt by tightening it with 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Then install the intermediate Steering Shaft seal to the Steering Column, lift and support the vehicle, and connect the intermediate Steering Shaft to the power steering gear stub shaft. Install the lower pinch bolt, turn it on to 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.), and take the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) out of the Steering Column. Finally, apply the intermediate Steering Shaft seal to the power steering gear, apply the tire and wheel assembly, lower the vehicle, and apply the left instrument panel insulator.
