    Q:
How to service and repair the steering shaft on Chevrolet Impala? Posted by Customer
    A:
Service and repair operations on the Steering Shaft begin with vehicle lifting and supporting. The first step involves removing the tire and wheel assembly before you can reach the intermediate Steering Shaft lower pinch bolt through the intermediate Steering Shaft seal. Before removing the power steering gear stub shaft lower pinch bolt drive the front wheels straight while keeping the Steering Column in its lock position to avoid damaging the sir coil assembly. Move the intermediate Steering Shaft from the power steering gear stub shaft and then lower the vehicle down. The left instrument panel insulator must be removed before you can access the upper steering hole to reposition the intermediate Steering Shaft seal. Use bolt and tool combination number sp 1661 to disconnect the intermediate Steering Shaft from the Steering Column after removing its upper pinch bolt. Once alignment is correct, proceed with these steps: thread the upper pinch bolt through the Steering Column and tighten it to 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Secure the intermediate Steering Shaft seal at the Steering Column before you re-support the vehicle at a raised position. Insert the intermediate Steering Shaft between the power steering gear stub shaft and tighten the lower pinch bolt to 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Place the intermediate Steering Shaft seal on the power steering gear before reinstalling the tire and wheel assembly and lowering the vehicle and installing the left instrument panel insulator.
