2004 Chevrolet Malibu Rack and Pinion Boot Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot on 2004 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Vehicle repair begins with a lift followed by tire removal then wheel detachment before proceeding with front wheel removal. Discard the outer Tie Rod End and the outer to inner tie rod jam nut while you remove both components. Cut the inner steering gear boot clamp with cutters after removing its spring clamp from the boot. Toss both clamps into the garbage bag. Before installation remove the steering gear boot from the gear through the inner tie rod while taking the time to clean the gear shaft threads and examining all sealing surfaces for debris-free operation. To install the new clamp on the steering gear boot's inner part use service kit grease in the indicated locations until the boot fits the steering gear groove. Attach the boot to the inner tie rod of the steering gear then set up the keystone clamp pliers (J 22610) to crimp the steering gear housing's internal boot clamp. First position the small spring clamp over the outer side of the inner Tie Rod End before installing a new jam nut and the outer and inner tie rod ends and wheel. Conclude by setting the toe.
