2004 Chevrolet Malibu Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2004 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Begin intermediate Steering Shaft replacement by placing the steering lever into the lock (FULL UP) position and steering the wheels to face straight ahead. Place the j 42640 (Steering Column Lock Pin) through the steering column entry to hold the proper shaft position. Lift your vehicle and put it on supports before taking out the left front tire. Start by taking out the pinch bolt that holds the intermediate shaft to the steering gear then remove the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Discard both components. Use the j 42640 (Steering Column Lock Pin) to access the steering column hole and then lower the vehicle before discarding this bolt and the intermediate shaft pinch bolt at the steering column shaft. Pull the intermediate shaft away from the steering column shaft to free it. Then unseat the intermediate shaft seal from the dash by squeezing each of its four tabs and pulling it towards the vehicle's interior. Extract the combination of intermediate shaft and seal from the vehicle. During installation you must push the new intermediate shaft/seal through the dash opening while checking that four engine-side tabs fully seat the seal without twisting or compressing it. Use steady force from within the vehicle to correctly position the intermediate shaft seal. Secure the new intermediate shaft to the steering column shaft before mounting a new steering column pinch bolt onto the intermediate shaft and tightening it to 49 nm (36 ft. Lbs.). Screw a new intermediate shaft to the steering gear shaft while attaching a new steering gear pinch bolt to the shaft followed by torque tightening to 49 nm (36 ft. Lbs.). You should reinstall the left front wheel at this point.
