2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Clutch assembly on 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: The tools needed to replace the compressor clutch assembly include: a compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872) and snap ring pliers (J 6083) and an m6x1.0 tap. To perform the compressor clutch assembly replacement you will need three main tools which are the compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872), snap ring pliers (J 6083), and m6x1.0 tap. Begin by swapping out the compressor and the three adjustable dowels on the compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872) for three 5/16 x 1 inch bolts. The first step involves replacing the compressor clutch plate bolt with the compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872) while it holds the compressor clutch plate. Start by using snap ring pliers (J 6083) to extract the compressor pulley snap ring followed by pulley removal. Keep using the snap ring pliers (J 6083) to remove the compressor clutch coil snap ring before taking out the compressor clutch coil. Use m6x1.0 tap to clean the clutch plate bolt threads followed by compressed air cleaning of residual debris. Use snap ring pliers (J 6083) to install first the compressor clutch coil and its snap ring before adding the compressor pulley along with its snap ring. Put a few drops of oil on the 0.4 mm (0.016 in) air gap shim before putting it inside the clutch drive plate before you install the compressor clutch plate. Measure the pulley-drive plate distance to set the air gap to 0.3-0.6 mm (0.012-0.024 in) by placing shims of suitable size. Add and secure the clutch drive plate bolt only after making sure the new drive plate bolt contains colored adhesive on at least 5 threads. Use the compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872) to achieve 12 n.m (106 lb in) torque. The compressor installation must include testing connections using the j 39400-a after reinstallation.
