2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the positive battery cable on 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500?
A: Start the Battery Cable replacement process by taking off both the negative cable and the positive cable snap. The positive Battery Cable process starts by loosening its bolt and carefully taking off the cable while recognizing the bolt remains part of the cable structure. You must loosen the positive cable bolt on the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) and remove the engine sight shield in case it is necessary. First remove the positive Battery Cable from the junction block after you snap off its junction block cover. When working with 4.8l, 5.3l and 6.0l engine vehicles raise the vehicle while supporting it with proper equipment and detach the negative cable clip from the positive clip. The 8.1l equipped vehicles need an additional step: removing the negative cable clip from the positive cable clip before lifting the vehicle. First detach the positive Battery Cable channel bolt then pull out its channel pin from the Oil Pan tab before extracting the cable from the channel. Remove the Battery Cable bracket bolt together with bracket from the Power Steering Pump on all 4.8l, 5.3l or 6.0l engines and disconnect both the starter lead nut along with the positive cable from the starter. Take off the positive cable clip which is fastened to the Oil Pan as well as the positive Battery Cable. The positive cable of 8.1l engines must be detached from both the starter lead nut and starter before removing the positive cable clip nut from the engine harness clip. During installation of the positive cable for 8.1l engines begin by first connecting the positive Battery Cable then following with attachment to the engine harness clip. Fasten the positive cable clip nut with torque setting of 8 n.m (71 lb in). Begin by fastening the positive cable to the starter before putting in the starter lead nut which should be torqued to 9 n.m (80 lb in). The installation process for positive battery cables on 4.8l, 5.3l or 6.0l engines requires cable attachment to the Oil Pan clip followed by cable securing using positive cable clip hardware to the Oil Pan. After connecting the starter with its positive cable install the starter lead nut while tightening it to 9 n.m (80 lb in). When working with 4.8l, 5.3l or 6.0l engine classes install the Battery Cable bracket followed by tightening the bolt to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). After mounting the positive Battery Cable in the channel you must slide its pin into the Oil Pan tab then install and tighten the positive Battery Cable channel bolt to 12 n.m (106 lb in). Lower the vehicle and install the negative cable clip to the positive cable clip before continuing only for engines with 8.1l. The negative cable clip requires installation onto the positive cable clip for all 4.8l, 5.3l, and 6.0l engine types. The positive cable must be inserted into the junction block and follow with junction block cover attachment. After replacement the engine sight shield should be reinstalled while tightening the positive cable bolt at the ubec to 9 n.m (80 lb in). Finish by connecting the negative cable and fastening the positive Battery Cable to 17 n.m (13 lb ft) yet keeping the positive Battery Cable cap back on.
