- Q: How to replace the positive battery cable on 2004 GMC Canyon?A: The replacement of the battery positive cable requires starting with a negative battery cable disconnection procedure. The protective cover needs opening so you can reach the battery positive cable terminal where you should ease the battery positive cable nut before disconnecting the cable from the battery. Press the locking tabs on retainer fasteners 3 and 4 to eliminate the battery cable from underhood fuse block cover. Gently remove the battery positive cable nut attaching it to the underneath fuse block. Withdraw the cable from the battery cables harness conduit upper section. The installer should raise the vehicle to access the rest of the cable through the wheelhouse while also removing the left wheelhouse liner. Detach the battery positive cable through the removal of the starter terminal nut. The technician should remove the battery positive cable from the battery cables harness conduit by accessing the engine wiring harness bracket . When installing the battery positive cable set it inside the battery cables harness conduit before closing the retainer at the engine wiring harness bracket. Connect the starter with positive terminal using the positive battery cable while installing the starter terminal nut at 9 N·m (80 lb in) torque. After installing the left wheelhouse liner and lowering the vehicle, place the battery positive cable into the upper part of the battery cables harness conduit. Screw the battery positive cable end to the underhood fuse block using a nut which needs to be tightened to 9 N·m (80 lb in). Thoroughly replace and secure the underhood fuse block cover with its locking tabs in position along with restoring battery cable retainer clips (3, 4). Use a wire brush to eliminate corrosion from the battery terminal and cable before tightly securing the battery cable nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in) while connecting the cable to the battery. Establish the protective cover on the battery positive cable terminal before restoring connection of the negative battery cable.
