Q: How to replace the catalytic converter on 4.3L, 4.8L, and 5.3L engines on 2004 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: In order to replace the Catalytic Converter on 4.3l, 4.8l, and 5.3l engines, raise and support the vehicle first. If equipped, unclip the Oxygen Sensor connection from the floor reinforcement and then separate the Oxygen Sensor electrical connector and detach the Oxygen Sensor clips from the frame. Pull off the connector position assurance (CPA) retainers and the Oxygen Sensor electric connectors. Clip the oxygen sensors electrical connectors from the hose clip as well as transmission crossmember and disconnect the cpa retainers and the Oxygen Sensor electrical connectors (1, 2). Give way the left as well as right exhaust manifold pipe nuts, along with exhaust muffler nuts then remove the Catalytic Converter. If necessary, deinstall the oxygen sensors. That is if required, for installation install the oxygen sensors and use anti-seize compound gm p/n 12377953, or equivalent to the threads of the old oxygen sensors, tighten to 42 nm (31 ft. Lbs.). Next install the Catalytic Converter and new exhaust manifold pipe seal to the exhaust manifolds. Place the right and left exhaust manifold pipe nuts snugly into place and then tighten down to 50 nm (39 ft. Lbs). Put the exhaust muffler nuts and tighten them up to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Connect the Oxygen Sensor electrical connectors (1, 2) and the cpa retainers, ticking the clips of oxygen sensors electrical connector to the hose clip and transmission cross member. Connect the Oxygen Sensor electrical connecters and cpa retainers, attaching the clip around the engine harness and Oxygen Sensor pigtail and connecting the Oxygen Sensor electrical connecter. If available, attach the Oxygen Sensor connection to the floor reinforcement prior to lowering the vehicle.
