2005 Buick Terraza CV Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear CV joint and seal on 2005 Buick Terraza?
A: To repair the wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal to the rear, collect the tools: Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) and Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572). Drive Axle Seal Clamp Plier (J 35566) and Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572). Firstly, take the seal clamp off the wheel drive shaft bar with side cutters and throw it away; second, remove the large clamp from the tripot joint without destructing the trilobal tripot bushing. Remove the inboard seal from trilobal tripot bushing and move it away from the joint, along the wheel drive shaft bar. Next, the housing from the tripot joint spider and the wheel drive shaft bar and the guide from the spring and the spring from the tripot housing can be removed. Mark the position of the tripot spider on the wheel drive shaft bar, ensuring that it remains at the 60-degree offset relationship while reassembling. Use a brass drift and a hammer to press the retaining barrel ring on the wheel drive shaft bar, and remove and toss the tripot spider. Inspect for damage or wear the inboard seal and tripot joint spider assembly, housing and trilobal tripot bushing. For assembly install a new small seal clamp on to the small end of the joint seal, slide this onto the wheel drive shaft bar making sure the small end enters the joint seal groove. Tighten the small seal retaining clamp using the J 42572 136Nm (100ft. lbs). Replace the new barrel retaining ring, the reference mark on the tripot spider with the wheel drive shaft bar, and the beveled edge of the tripot spider on the bar in reassembly. Check for engagement of the tripot spider and position the trilobal tripot bushing flush with the housing face. Grease the wheel drive shaft inboard seal, repacking the housing, installing the spring and guide with grease to retain. Mount the trilobal tripot bushing to the housing and mount the larger new seal retaining clamp to the inboard seal and slide the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly. Align the lip of the large diameter wheel drive shaft inboard seal with its groove without deformation. In order to align the joint assembly according to the appropriate vehicle dimension, use the J 35566 to ensure that the external tangs of the large seal retaining clamp are fully engaged. Lastly, rotate the inner tripot housing for 4 or 5 times to put grease in the tripot spider bearings.
