2005 Cadillac DeVille Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Rack and Pinion power steering gear on 2005 Cadillac DeVille?
A: Start the Rack And Pinion servicing and repairs by securely locking the steering column using the steering column antirotation pin (J 42640). This pin provides correct steering position. After vehicle elevation and support start by removing tires and wheels. First part away the outer tie rod retaining nuts and separate the outer tie rod from the Steering Knuckle with the steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B). Separate the intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion by detaching the pinch bolt at the shaft and disconnecting the intermediate shaft. Begin by removing the steering gear heat shield followed by the rear transmission mount upper mounting nuts. Starting with variable effort steering electrical connector disconnection as needed, drain the vehicle by positioning a pan beneath and removing pressure and return hoses connecting to the Rack And Pinion. Support the rear frame section with a jack before you remove the rear mounting bolts from the frame because you previously removed Rack And Pinion mounting bolts. After lowering the vehicle's rear section carefully, remove the Rack And Pinion assembly from the driver's side of the vehicle while transferring essential components. Place the Rack And Pinion inside the vehicle after installation then lift the rear frame section into position. Secure the frame mounting bolts at 192 nm (142 ft. Lbs.) then torque the transmission mount mounting nuts to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Once the Rack And Pinion bolts receive 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.) torque setting, install the power steering pressure and return hoses and tighten them to 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs.). You should first remove the drain pan and you must connect the variable effort steering electrical connector before reattaching the Rack And Pinion heat shield to its place. After connecting the outer tie rods to steering knuckles, torque the outer tie rods retaining nuts to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) then complete installation either through an additional 1/6 turn or reaching 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.). Position the intermediate shaft to the Rack And Pinion before torquing the pinch bolt to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). To complete the procedure properly reinstall the tires and wheels and lower the vehicle then remove the steering column antirotation pin (J 42640) before bleeding the power steering system and performing a front toe adjustment.
