2005 Chevrolet Cavalier Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain, sprockets, or tensioner on 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: The toollist includes tensioner tool (J 45027) for Timing Chain and sprocket and tensioner replacement projects. Tensioner tool (J 45027). Start your work by detaching the negative Battery Cable while removing the Camshaft cover. Raise and support the vehicle first then remove the engine front cover before bringing the vehicle down. Use a 24 mm open-end wrench to turn the Camshaft clockwise until the no. 1 Piston reaches its top dead center position at a 60 degree mark. To begin, uninstall the spark plugs first then remove the Timing Chain Tensioner followed by the upper Timing Chain Guide and finally use a 24 mm wrench to secure the camshafts. Start by removing the exhaust Camshaft sprocket bolt followed by the sprocket, Timing Chain Tensioner guide, engine mount, fixed Timing Chain Guide access plug and finally the fixed Timing Chain Guide. The next step involves removing the intake Camshaft sprocket bolt and sprocket followed by the Timing Chain through the top of the cylinder head. The installation sequence then includes the crankshaft sprocket then the oil nozzle and bolt. The next parts to remove include the balance shaft drive chain tensioner then adjustable balance shaft chain guide then small balance shaft drive chain guide and finally upper balance shaft drive chain guide. Dispose of the balance shaft drive chain more easily by positioning all slack between the crankshaft and water pump sprockets. Begin installation by affixing the upper balance shaft chain guide bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) before tightening the small balance shaft chain guide and adjustable balance shaft drive chain guide to 10 nm (89 inch lbs. Start by rotating the tensioner plunger 90 degrees and compressing it with the insertion of a paper clip until you are ready to install the Timing Chain Tensioner and bolt it down at 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). After paper clip removal, thread the oil nozzle and bolt into position then tighten both to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Begin by installing the crankshaft sprocket with its timing mark facing the 5 o'clock position then lower the Timing Chain into the cylinder head space. Next, position the intake Camshaft sprocket with its int diamond at the 2 o'clock mark and hand-tighten a new intake Camshaft sprocket bolt. Guide the Timing Chain to ride around the crankshaft and intake Camshaft sprockets before aligning them using their timing marks. After fixing the tensioner guide with 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) torque, proceed with installing the exhaust Camshaft sprocket by rotating the Timing Chain into the exh triangle at the 10 o'clock mark while hand-tightening a new exhaust Camshaft sprocket bolt. Tighten the fixed Timing Chain Guide bolts to 10 nm torque (89 inch lbs.). Coat the Timing Chain Guide bolt access hole plug with gm p/n 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) and bolt it down with 90 nm (66 ft. Lbs.). After mounting the engine, check the Timing Chain Tensioner for damage before replacing it. Measure the entire length of the Timing Chain Tensioner assembly because it should be 72 mm (2.83 in) from end to end. The complete length of the Timing Chain assembly must measure exactly 72 mm (2.83 in). The tensioner stroke should reach 72 mm 2.83 in. As a cross-check, use j 45027-2 in a vise to install the Piston assembly before turning the ratchet cylinder with j 45027-1 . Clean the bore of the tensioner before installing the compressed Piston assembly which should reach a 72 mm (2.83 in) length. Secure the new Timing Chain Tensioner assembly with 75 nm (55 ft. Lbs.) of torque. Use an appropriate tool to reduce the tensioner's compression to 2 mm (0.079 in) while using a 24 mm wrench to secure the Camshaft before torquing the new Camshaft bolts to 85 nm (63 ft. Lbs.) with an added 30-degree angle. Installation begins with the Camshaft cover accompanied by vehicle lifting and engine front cover placement followed by vehicle lowering and negative Battery Cable reconnection.
