2005 Chevrolet Classic Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2005 Chevrolet Classic?
A: To overhaul Brake Master Cylinder, first, take it out of the vehicle, clamp the mounting flange in bench vise, making sure that the rear of primary Piston is exposed. In turn, clean the area around the reservoir cap, and then get rid of it and the diaphragm, which should be inspected for cuts, cracks, nicks, or deformation where any problematic parts should be changed accordingly. Take of master cylinder reservoir, and use a smooth, round-ended tool to push theprimary Piston and take off the Piston retainer, then the primary Piston assembly. Plug the cylinder inlet and rear outlet port and hook low pressure non-lubricated and filtered air into the front outlet port to pull out the secondary Piston along with the primary and second seals and the return spring through the front outlet port discarding the primary Piston assembly, piston retainer and seals. Clean master cylinder's interior and exterior, secondary Piston and return spring with denatured alcohol and check for cracks, scoring, pitting or corrosion and replace the master cylinder in case of defaults. Dry all components with filtered non-lubricated air and apply delco supreme 11(R) (GM P/N 12377967, Canadian P/N 992667 a) or similar dot-3 brake fluid to the master cylinder bore, secondary Piston, return spring, and all overhaul components from a clean sealed container. Mount the lubricated new primary seal & retainer and the new secondary seal on the secondary Piston and then install the lubricated return spring and secondary Piston assembly into the cylinder bore, then the lubricated new primary Piston assembly. Push the main Piston down using a smooth, round end tool to put in the new Piston retainer, then reconnect the master cylinder reservoir and cap, as well as the diaphragm before placing the master cylinder back into the vehicle.
