2005 Chevrolet Corvette Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the automatic transmission shift cable on 2005 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Before beginning replacement of the automatic transmission range selector cable you should lift and support the vehicle while shifting the floor shift control to neutral position unless replacing a damaged cable. First remove both the Catalytic Converter assembly along with the driveline tunnel closeout panel. A large flat bladed screwdriver can be used to carefully remove the shift control cable end clip from its position on the floor shift control arm stud while you should remove the shift control cable from the driveline tunnel bracket through actions including prying the cable retaining staple clip, depressing the cable retaining tabs and sliding the cable out of its bracket slot. Obtain the shift control cable end clip from the transmission by releasing it from the shift lever stud after moving the cable and bracket away from the studs and unthreading the nuts that hold the shift control cable bracket to the transmission. To remove the shift control cable bracket from the shift control cable first use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry the Shift Cable retaining staple clip followed by depressions of the Shift Cable retaining tabs followed by retracting the cable from the bracket slot. First install the shift control cable bracket to the shift control cable by placing its smaller diameter end inside the bracket slot then using the staple clip to secure it. Secure the shift control cable within the driveline tunnel bracket using keeping it in place through the combination of retaining tabs and staple clip. The shift control cable end should align with the floor shift control arm stud before tightening it into place. Afterward, install the shift control cable bracket to the transmission studs then fasten each retaining nut to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Perform the following steps: first verify both neutral positions of floor shift control and transmission while directing the shift control cable to the transmission shift lever stud then fasten it. The installation of a new transmission shift control cable requires removal of the shipping guard from the adjuster lock followed by depression of the adjuster lock. Test the shift control cable operation under the following conditions: enable the parking brake, turn the Ignition Switch to on without starting the engine, apply hand brakes, then shift through gears while listening for the transmission shift lever sounds on the same service position. Any cables binding or absence of transmission noises while shifting should trigger an inspection of the shift control cable. To complete the procedure shift the floor shift control into park position while performing these steps: regular brake release, ignition switch off and parking brake release. To verify proper transmission shifting and operative detents drive the vehicle in a low traffic area while raising and supporting the vehicle and installing the driveline tunnel closeout panel and Catalytic Converter assembly before the test drive is finished.
